Eeew, you still breastfeed? That’s just weird!
Okay, I am going to keep this short. I only want to share my thoughts and beliefs that come from within and not so much social views on when it is appropriate to stop breastfeeding your babies and their reasoning behind them.
There are so many issues on this topic including breastfeeding in public, whether to feed on demand or not, and (trust me) the list goes on. But getting back to my topic of when to stop breastfeeding, it has came up in a handful of conversations since I’ve given birth to my little one and I feel good about my decision to keep it doing until my little one says it’s time.
The views on breastfeeding your baby past a year are mostly – “Eeew, you need to stop!” Personally, I think the eeew comes from our society and the culture that we live in. I don’t know why, but that’s a fact. I will never understand why we’ve put a cut-off period on breastfeeding and anything after that is considered to be weird, strange, gross, and even taboo.
Well riddle me this: why is it that we wean our babies off the breast just to put them onto the bodily fluids of another animal. A non human animal that also produces milk that ALSO comes out of a teat? Why am I supposed to switch my baby from milk made by her human mother to a cow produced milk for her calf? Personally, I find switching a baby from mothers milk to cows milk strange. Sue me.
Why I take my stance on the end of breastfeeding.
It’s actually not all that complex. Sometimes you don’t need to look far and deep for answers you’re seeking.
My view is that it seems only natural to let your baby and your body tell you when to stop. I mean, it’s not exactly a faucet that your kid gets used to and has a chance of being dependent on for a lifetime. It seems silly to do nature’s work for her. Our bodies are incredible machines as it should’ve been noted when we grew a human within our bellies. Our bodies know when to release hormones, when to produce milk, when we have our periods, when a woman body goes into menopause, when it’s time for us to sleep and so on. So who am I to tell my baby, “No more.”
I will be THAT MOTHER until Mother Nature tells me it’s time. I will let her be my guide as it was intended NOT by society rules. I will not be swayed. Until my teat runs dry, my little one will have her mothers milk that is meant specifically for her and meets all of her daily needs. I urge you to check out the Amazing Benefits of Breastfeeding post I wrote a while back. It’s really astonishing!
To all of you mothers breastfeeding until nature rings the bell, I praise you! To all of you who are wondering when the right time is, I think I’ve made two, very simple, points that really don’t need backing.
